From airports to office parties to late night infomercials, one is bombarded with images of these yellow boxes, and the promise of a short-cut to language learning. Sadly, to borrow a Chinese expression, Rosetta Stone is tu2you3xu1ming2 - only a false and empty reputation.There are three main problems with Rosetta Stone Chinese V4: (1) Rosetta Stone's rhetoric that it will let you `learn a language as a child does' is a very, very enticing bit of advertising, but it is also very, very false, especially with a language so distant as Chinese; (2) Using the same stock program that is used for teaching Western languages to teach Chinese leads to a host of problems; (3) The price is far too high given the quality, and there are many better quality, reasonably priced choices on the market. Many people try Rosetta Stone and give up, only to blame themselves for not becoming fluent. I have been through all 3 sets, but in the end it doesn't matter because a computer program cannot teach you to communicate with another human being. The whole point of learning a language is communicating with others, not talking to your monitor. Anybody who tells you otherwise is trying to separate you from your $600.Also, many of RS's marketing claims are stretched beyond credibility. For example, ask a State Department employee which products they use to learn language. They do not use this. In fact, some government agencies have very good language programs that can be found for free on the internet or in libraries. After a YEAR of completing Levels 1 through 3 I felt hopeless--BUT I ran into some great advice: learn from audio tapes. With audio tapes, my speaking and listening ability improved DRASTICALLY in a month. Within 3 months of using audio tape materials I started DREAMING in Mandarin! So far I've used all of Pimsleur Mandarin 1-3, and I am currently studying from New Practical Chinese Reader and the Foreign Service Institute's "Standard Chinese".
